Sinopsis
The book Demografía de los extranjeros: incidencia en el crecimiento de la población looks at the demographic implications of recent immigration to Spain, which in the first five years of the 21st century has welcomed in over two and a half million foreign nationals. The study it is based on was undertaken by the Sociology of International Migrations Team (ESOMI) at the University of Corunna, and combines detailed statistical analysis with qualitative research involving direct contact with the main immigrant communities in Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia and Galicia. As well as analyzing the main ways in which immigrants have contributed to Spanish population dynamics in the last ten years growth, geographical distribution, fertility, marriage, mortality, etc. it considers the characteristics and differences they exhibit by nationality and place of residence. Its texts provide a clear illustration of how immigration is affecting Spanish societys internal reproduction processes. Successive immigration waves (EU, African, Latin American, Eastern European) have produced demographic growth rates that place our country at the head of Europe: specifically, immigration adds around five hundred thousand persons a year to the Spanish population, with foreign nationals accounting for around one half of the current increase in birth rates. In sum, this book provides an overview of the current scenario and emerging trends in Spanish immigration.
