Sinopsis

Through the analysis of sources, statistical records, and archives, Beatriz Joda examines the presence of enslaved women in the domestic and urban spheres of Havana between the 18th and 19th centuries. This is an excellent contribution to the studies of slavery, enslaved women, and Cuban history, offering a humanistic and critical perspective that invites us to rethink how we approach certain previously overlooked issues, from the utility to the value of the enslaved person transformed into labor and merchandise, from economics to social interaction, from micro to macrohistory, where hygienist theories, the concept of the modern city, and the slave labor hidden beneath ostentation acquire meaning.
