Sinopsis
Luis Antonio de Villena (Madrid, October 31, 1951), poet, narrator, essayist, literary critic and Spanish translator, usually classified in the group known as novísimos or venecianos within the currents of contemporary Spanish poetry. He was influenced by the classic Greek and Latin authors, and especially by Kavafis and Cernuda. He graduated in Romance philology and also studied classical and Oriental languages. His creative work in verse or prose has been translated into several languages. He received the National Awar of Critics of Poetry (1981), the Azorín Prize for novels (1995), the International Award of Poetry of the City of Melilla (1997), the Sonrisa Vertical Prize of erotic prose (1999) and the poetry prize Generation of 27 (2004). In 2007 he won the 2nd International Prize of Poetry El Viaje del Parnaso for a book entitled La prosa del mundo. He is doctor honoris causa at the University of Lille (France) and has made translations of William Beckford, the sonnets of Michelangelo Buonarroti, of the English poet Ted Hughes (ex-husband of Sylvia Plath), of Catullus the Roman, of the medieval goliardic poetry and of the part of the Palatine Anthology called Muse of the boys, compiled by Straton of Sardes and including homoerotic poems of various authors. He has written numerous essays of literary criticism and regularly publishes articles of opinion. He has also participated in contemporary poetry anthologies and has prepared various critical editions. He is also a regular lecturer and participant in radio and television programs.
