Sinopsis
He studied painting and art history at the School of Arts and Crafts of Cordoba, where he met the painter Ginés Liébana. At the age of 14 he read St. John of the Cross. He started to frequent the Provincial Library, where he met the poet Juan Bernier, who presented him the works of Marcel Proust, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén, and especially Luis Cernuda. He works for various national newspapers and gives lectures and conferences in Spanish cultural centers. In 1984 he received the Prince of Asturias Literary Award. He was declared a Favorite Son of Andalusia in 1988, and won the Andalusia Prize for Literature in 1992. He received the Gold Medal of the City of Cordoba in 1984, and that of the Province of Malaga in 2004. He is currently a member of the Advisory Commission of the Andalusian Center for Letters of which he is director. His poetry has a Gongorian accent and sensuality, and also embraces the religious themes of rites and processions. His hitherto created poetic work is collected in his Poesía completa (1940-2008) (Madrid, Visor, 2008). In May 2008 he won the Queen Sofía Award of Hispano-American Poetry.
