Sinopsis
Born in Madrid in 1960 and raised in Córdoba, Raúl is one of the most singular creators of Spanish comics and a prodigious illustrator. Radical and avant-garde in his conception of visual narrative, he possesses such a diversity of resources that, at first glance, one might say his work is collective rather than individual, though it never ceases to be idiosyncratic. Convinced that the way a story is told always modifies what is narrated, he began to adopt a certain trial-and-error approach, like that of a binary musical measure, in a series of comics created in the mid-1980s for Madriz magazine, in which he dreamily reflected his childhood in Córdoba. Since then, the artist has modified his graphic style according to the demands of each narrative. The pieces included in this exhibition catalog, are a good example of this Raúl. Comics and drawings in binary compass, curated by Javier Fernández and held in Córdoba, in the UCOCultura exhibition hall, between October 28 and December 9, 2024. Included here are all the works exhibited, belonging to his two main works: Berlin 1931 (1991) and Ventanas a Occidente (1994) and which include a selection of comic pages (all with scripts by Felipe Hernández Cava) and the complete series of press illustrations "Russian Diary", commissioned by El País to illustrate a chronicle by the journalist Ignacio Carrión.
